Luncheon in the Karkloof

The Pied Kingfisher seen enjoying fresh fish in the picture are some of the very contented clientele who patronise the pans at the Karkloof Conservation Centre.  The water level at present is low, and fishing is easier for the kingfishers and the wading birds.  Amongst the many birds seen enjoying a meal on the same day were a Grey Heron with French taste who fancied a large frog and a Blackshouldered Kite who brought his own lunch in the form of a rodent which he ate whilst seated in one of the trees near the hide!

Birdwatching is a pleasant form of relaxation, particularly in the comfortable, well situated bird hides on the Gartmore and Loskop farms at the Karkloof Conservation Centre.  Besides the viewing, there is also a very pleasant picnic area with tables and benches and braai facilities.  If the 800 metre walk from the parking lot to the hides is a strain, phone the Karkloof Conservation Office at 033 330 2992 and reserve the golf cart for your visit.
